Goals for the semester

1. Gain a better understanding of ways to integrate literacy into my classroom
2. Learn the importance of teaching literacy, and how to teach my students the importance of literacy
3. Become more confident in teaching in general, and in teaching literacy
4. Get experience

I'm looking forward to learning more about teaching literacy. I have never been very confident in my literacy skills, so I have been nervous about teaching it. I hope this class will give me ideas and strategies to improve my teaching. I am also looking forward to getting expereince in placement teaching and working with students on literacy.

This is a great opportunity for you to really take a close look at yourself as a literacy learner and teacher. What things specifically make you uncomfortable? Field experience and this class, with their high levels of support and low level of risk, are perfect for focusing on these things and pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone. What's the worst that could happen?

Jess-I too feel nervous about teaching literacy because I do not feel confident with my knowledge and ability to implement successful literacy-based lessons.

You have many goals for this semester. However, I am sure you will meet them all. I really like your second goal (learn how to teach your students the importance of literacy). This reminds me of my fifth/sixth grade teacher. Whenever anyone asked her why a subject was important she referenced a poster distributed by the school district that listed each subject and why it was important. Looking back I laugh but I am sure that poster did not give students the explanation they wanted or needed.

Jessica i agree with your goals because i feel that many of us i the class have the same insecurities involving the teaching of literacy. i feel like those of us that are Language Arts majors have taken all the ENG classes but those are classes about the literature not the teaching of literature. I feel that this class is one of the first (besides 348) and it is a short time to learn so much.
