Digital Native Quiz

When I took the quiz, I missed the questions about modding and smart mobs.  Both of these terms I have never heard before until I took this quiz.  On the other hand, I knew the terms:
blog, wiki, instant messaging and massive multiplayer online games.  I am especially familiar with instant messaging and wikis since I use both multiple times daily.  Since I did miss 2 terms, I am not considered a Digital Native, however I do not feel like I have grown up with limited access to technology and new media.
Emergent does apply to my current level of digital literacy.  As I child, I was exposed to technology constantly.  With so many experiences as a child, I now feel confident with technology (for the most part) and feel as though I have the skills necessary to problem solve if needed.
Tompkins talks about emergent literacy as being a long process.  Throughout the process, the more positive experiences that a child has with literacy, the better off that child will be in terms of skills, confidence and enjoyment of literacy.  I see this being the same with emergent digital literacy.  The more positive experiences that a child has with digital literacy, the better off that child will be in terms of skills, confidence and enjoyment of digital literacy.

I also did not know about modding and smart mobs prior to taking the quiz (and I really don't think I still understand them). Unlike you, I did not feel I had very much digital literacy in k-12. In these years, I was only introduced to typing and excel classes. I did not, and still do not, find these as positive ways for incorporating digital literacy. However, I linked the quiz to Tompkins in the same way you did. the more positive exposures to digital literacy will help to create a more knowledgeable digital native.

I had similar results to yours. I wasn't a digital native, but I also wouldn't consider myself emergent. I also use instant message all the time, but was not as familiar with the term Wiki until we learned about it in last weeks class. I wasn't familiar with the terms modding or smart mobs either, this obviously isn't something that is a frequently used thing in our generation or at least amongst us, because I noticed that olivia also didn't know what they were.

I feel the same Erica, because we did grow up with technology all around us, so we are not digital immigrants, we are emergent because as the newest technology comes out we are learning about it (just as those that created it are learning about its ups and downs). We live in a society were technology is mandatory to stay connected and for us to get decent grades and turn in our homework. I feel like we are all (or mostly are) emergent in digital, and because we are not the only ones learning, the people that create the newest technology are also learning new things, which is why new technology keeps coming out.
